Our adventure begins with a historic trolley tour, offering an entertaining and informative introduction to Galena’s rich past and distinctive architecture. From its origins as a Native American settlement to its rise as a bustling river port and supply center during the lead mining boom, Galena’s story is as fascinating as it is beautiful. Named for galena, Latin for lead sulfide, the mineral that fueled its growth, the town once attracted notable figures such as Ulysses S. Grant and Abraham Lincoln.
You’ll be captivated by the abundance of ornate Victorian homes built in the 1800s and the remarkably well-preserved 19th-century architecture that defines the town today, along with its museums, historic sites, and charming shops along Main Street.
