Get ready to explore Bluff Country — a breathtaking landscape untouched by glaciers and bursting with fall colors. Spanning parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois, the Driftless Region is known for its rugged hills, deep river valleys, limestone bluffs, spring-fed waterfalls, and cold-water trout streams. Its ecology is more aligned with New England than the central Midwest, making it truly one-of-a-kind.
Day 1: Raptors & Reds
We’ll kick things off at Minnesota’s National Eagle Center, where you’ll see bald and golden eagles up close and learn about their conservation. Then, we’ll visit a local agri-business winery to see how wine is crafted in this unique region.
That evening, we’ll check into the beautiful Charmant Hotel in La Crosse — a renovated 1898 candy factory overlooking the Mississippi. With original maple floors, wood beams, and exposed brick, it blends historic charm with modern comfort.
Day 2: Trails, Tastes & Culture
After breakfast, we’ll head to Grandad Bluff Park for panoramic views and scenic hiking. Then, it’s off to People’s Food Co-op to learn about its mission to support local farmers. Grab lunch here or explore one of La Crosse’s many restaurants.
Spend your afternoon as you like — we recommend visiting the Riverside International Friendship Gardens, where each garden celebrates a different global culture. After dinner, we’ll learn more about the history of the city with a ghost walking tour!
Day 3: Farm-Fresh Flavor in Viroqua
Our final day brings us to Viroqua. First stop: the Viroqua Public Market, followed by lunch at the famed Driftless Café, known for sourcing ingredients from over 200 local organic farms.
We’ll wrap up with a hands-on class at Wonderstate Coffee and a sweet tour of B&E Trees, home of bourbon barrel-aged maple syrup.
