Marches and Movements: A One-of-a Kind Walking Tour of Bay View, Milwaukee

This unique tour will explore the immigrant, labor, and civil rights history of Bay View and Milwaukee through an impactful walking tour of a small corner of Bay View, Milwaukee. Join Dr. Tim Thering, retired UWM at Waukesha history professor, as he provides us with stories of the past as we learn why this area is so historical.  Dr. Tim will take us back to the immigrant workers’ struggle for the 8-hour workday, relive the dramatic story of the Bay View Italian Anarchists, and the Milwaukee civil rights movement for fair housing.

The stories come alive along the way, as we visit Groppi’s, a corner grocery store founded by Italian immigrants in 1913 and still maintains the store’s traditions and history as a Bay View cornerstone. While listening to the story about Father James Groppi, their son, and the NAACP Youth Council and Commandos, we will sample some of the store’s delicacies.

Finally, we’ll head to a James Beard award-winning Serbian restaurant, Three Brothers. You will find this cozy venue filled with Old World charm and the food is the exact definition of comfort and nostalgia. Dobro nam dosli ~ Welcome! 

We’ll stroll to our next location, a cocktail lounge with hip décor, where everyone will get a taste of one of their specialty ice cream drinks. Unless you’re dressed from the 1950’s, you might feel out of place in this special location, but don’t worry, the place is a time capsule, not the people! We will raise a glass of cheer and relax in this midcentury splendor.
